What Is Hitbodedut? Tap to collapse

Hitbodedut is personal, unscripted conversation with God, usually in a quiet place, in your own language, exactly as you feel. You do not have to pray correctly. You just have to be honest.

Purpose Tap to expand
  • Build a real, personal relationship with God (devekut, cleaving to Him).
  • Release emotional pressure and speak your heart without filters.
  • Gain clarity and inner guidance by saying things out loud.
  • Strengthen trust that you are never alone, even in struggle.
  • Clean and refine your inner world: thoughts, desires, emotions.
When to Practice Tap to expand
  • Night, before sleep: best for emotional release and review of the day.
  • Early morning: mind is clear, day has not yet started.
  • Any quiet moment: a car, a walk, a closed room, whenever you can be alone.
Preparation & Breathing Tap to expand
  • Find a private spot: a room, car, forest path, balcony.
  • Silence your phone or put it on Do Not Disturb.
  • Stand or sit comfortably, spine relaxed, feet grounded.

Simple breathing before you start:

  1. Inhale gently through the nose for a count of 4.
  2. Hold the breath softly for a count of 2.
  3. Exhale slowly through the mouth for a count of 6.
  4. Repeat this for about 5 cycles until you feel a little calmer.

When you feel ready, simply say (even quietly): I am here with You.

Full Step-by-Step Practice Tap to expand
  1. Gratitude (1 to 3 minutes): Say thank You for everything you can think of: life, body, breath, family, friends, opportunities, lessons, even struggles that help you grow.
  2. Speak about your day (5 minutes): Tell God what happened, who you met, what was good, what was hard, how you reacted. Speak naturally, as if to a close friend.
  3. Share your struggles (5 to 10 minutes): Open up about fear, anger, loneliness, shame, temptations, confusion. Nothing is too small.
  4. Ask for help (3 to 5 minutes): Ask clearly: for healing, strength, clarity, better character traits, protection, wisdom.
  5. Silent listening (2 to 5 minutes): Sit in quiet. Breathe gently. Notice any feeling of calm, direction, or insight that arises.
Short Version (5 Minutes) Tap to expand
  1. 30 seconds: say a few things you are grateful for.
  2. 2 minutes: tell God what is really bothering you right now.
  3. 1 minute: ask for help in simple, clear words.
  4. 1 minute: pause in silence, breathing gently.
What to Say (Examples) Tap to expand
  • God, I do not know what to do. Please guide me.
  • Help me be the best version of myself that You want.
  • Please protect my family and those I love.
  • Give me strength to overcome this anger, fear, or habit.
  • Show me what You want from me in this situation.
  • Help me calm my mind and trust You more.
If Your Mind Is Busy Tap to expand
  • Tell God directly: My mind is racing, I cannot focus. Please help me.
  • Return to the breath: inhale 4, hold 2, exhale 6 (3 to 5 cycles).
  • Repeat a simple line quietly: I am here with You.
  • Do not fight thoughts. Let them pass like clouds and keep speaking from the heart.
Signs It’s Working Tap to expand
  • You feel lighter, even if nothing outside has changed yet.
  • You feel more honest with yourself.
  • You gain small insights about what to do next.
  • You sense calm, warmth, or quiet after speaking.
  • You slowly react differently in similar situations in daily life.
Deeper Meaning Tap to expand
  • Hitbodedut brings the soul closer to God. This is devekut, cleaving to Him.
  • Your emotions and character traits slowly refine through honest speech every day.
  • You begin to notice God’s presence not only in prayer, but in all details of life.
After the Session Tap to expand
  • Notice your main feeling or insight and, if you wish, write it down.
  • Take one small action that matches what you understood.
  • Carry a short phrase with you, like You are with me or Help me walk in truth today.
  • Be gentle with yourself. Consistency is more important than perfection.
